The truth about Caffeine

SoyCoffee.com was kind enough to send over the book called The Truth About Caffeine. According to the website, ther are “More Than 35 Deaths from Overdoses and Still No Warning Labels Are Required.” This is a book that everyone should read. This well researched book is worth every penny. It covers many aspects of why caffeine is dangerous us as individuals and as a society.

“The Truth About Caffeine” exposes caffeine?s darker side that scientists know but that the beverage, confectionery and pharmaceutical industries have tried to suppress. Caffeine is a highly addictive drug, does not offer any nutritional value and has not been proven safe. Epidemiological, clinical and laboratory studies link caffeine to heart disease, pancreas cancer, bladder cancer, hypoglycemia and central nervous system disorders.

After finishing the book, I was interested to learn that caffeine can cause so many side effects on the human body. As caffeine is defined as a drug because it stimulates the central nervous system, causing increased heart rate and alertness (amongst other symptoms), it is a wonder that more people don’t drink decaffeinated. Caffeine is so addictive and the side affects are scary for those who abruptly stop consuming it. I was interested in knowing that headaches, muscle aches, temporary depression and irritability are just some side effects.

I was also interested in knowing that people may think that they are getting plenty of liquids when they drink caffeinated beverages. However, as caffeine works against the body by producing a mild dehydrating effect (because it increases the need to urinate) Caffeine may also cause the body to lose calcium and potassium, causing sore muscles.

I know that I do consume my fair share of tea, which contains caffeine, however I will consider the alternatives listed in the book.
