The owners of Daruma, a Korean & Japanese restaurant in Rutherford, New Jersey, opened a new fresh Mexican restaurant called Serrano’s. The menu is well thought out and prepared fresh daily. The intimate setting is cozy and clean and an outdoor patio is available during the summer.
The menu contains over 20 items not including the daily specials. The food ranges in price from $7-$12 and the daily lunch special is usually $5. They offer a large variety of vegetarian options and Ken, the owner, will prepare other vegan entrees upon request.
My favorite item is the veggie burrito. This meal is filled with hearty grilled veggies, creamy black beans, shredded cheddar cheese, sour cream, mild homemade salsa stuffed to the top with a lime cilantro rice mixture. It’s truly amazing. Serrano’s, unlike various Mexican chain restaurants, is fresh and does not leave you feeling bloated and overstuffed.
I also tried the lime tortilla chips with salsa. The freshly cooked chips come out golden yellow with a hint of salt and lime. Dip them into the light, mild salsa and you’re in for a treat. The salsa is not chunky; it’s actually quite smooth. Chris, the carnivore at the table tried the Serrano Burrito with pork. He said it was the best burrito he’s ever had. Even the vegetables were good.
It is totally worth checking out!
Neither Serrano’s nor Daruma have a website, but you can get a menu by calling them up at 201-507-8820. They are located at 324 Park Avenue in Rutherford right across from Krauzers.
They’re right up the street from us, and we’ve been meaning to try them out for a while. The owner stopped by a while back, and he seemed like a really nice guy.
They also got a nice write-up by Bill Pitcher on the Record’s food blog.
