This bag of popcorn was sitting in my kitchen for a quite a while before I noticed that every time I passed by, it was giving me the eye. So, finally, I succumbed one night and dug in.
After I opened the bag, I pretty much ate the whole thing in one sitting, aside from some crumbs. And this is no small bag we’re talking about; 5 ounces might not sound like much, but it got me through quite a few episodes of Willie Aames’ Bibleman.
Anyway, taste-wise, O Organics is doing a nice job. This popcorn is delicious. But a lot of companies sell popcorn that tastes good. Aside from the taste, what kept me eating this was the reasonable amount of salt they use (180mg – 7% of USRDA per 1 oz. serving). Even after gorging myself, my lips didn’t taste like I had just swum in an ocean, plus my fingers weren’t covered in oily residue.
I was interested to learn that back in the mid-1990s, The Center for Science in the Public Interest took a look at movie popcorn and uncovered some scary info. According to their report, a medium-size buttered popcorn contained more fat than a breakfast of bacon and eggs, a Big Mac and fries, and a steak dinner combined. The reasons for this were the coconut oil used in cooking and the partially hydrogenated oil used in the buttery topping.
You don’t have to worry so much about this O Organics popcorn, though. Eating a giant bag like I did included 40g of fat, but that’s five 2-cup servings at 8g of fat each, which I’m comfortable with. And they use safflower, canola, and/or sunflower oil, so the saturated fat content is a pretty reasonable .5g/serving – 3% of USRDA.
So, if you’re looking for a simple, relatively healthy snack, I’d suggest giving this variety of O Organics a try. They offer other kinds, too, which include pre-popped Organic White Cheddar and microwavable versions of both flavors. I don’t have nutritional info on any of the ones I didn’t try, so you might want to take a quick look at the labels.
O Organics is a house brand of Safeway supermarkets. It’s good to see a chain incorporating more organic products into their own lines of foods; hopefully, this leads to more awareness and interest in people looking to eat healthier.
