I was really excited to try the Gaea Greek food line when I first heard about them. I love Greek food, especially kalamata olives, and thought that the olive oil, kalamata olive tapenade, and sundried tomato tapenade I got to try would be delicious.
First, let me start by saying I’m really impressed with the Gaea company in general. Their commitment to sustainability is obvious because they’re making the world’s first carbon-neutral olive oil. The company works alongside MyClimate, a Swiss non-profit that works with companies to offset greenhouse gasses.
Gaea has calculated the environmental impact of their olive oils, and they make contributions to MyClimate that help fund renewable energy projects like solar, wind and biomass.
Now for the food itself.
The small jar of extra virgin olive oil they sent was delicious. It was very light and subtle, and this is definitely an olive oil that you’ll want to eat on bread or salad. Because it’s so light, cooking with it will bury the flavor, so I wouldn’t recommend pouring it in spaghetti sauce because you’ll just be wasting it. I was really impressed with how delicate the flavor was, and this was definitely an olive oil I would love to use every day.
I didn’t like the kalamata olive tapenade at first. Kalamatas are strong and salty to begin with, but this was too salty to be enjoyable, and I only ate a few bites before giving up on it. But I went back to it a few days later, and the taste had grown on me. I appreciated the strong flavor, and ended up eating the rest of the jar with some pita crackers. If you decide to go with this spread, don’t give up on it straight off. The flavor is a bit intense at first, but keep going. You won’t be sorry.
The sundried tomatoes tapenade was really good. I tried it on grainy crackers and crusty bread, and enjoyed it most on the bread. You could really taste the tomatoes, and this was a spread I would buy again.
All in all, I really enjoyed the Gaea products. The line of was very tasty, and the olive oil is definitely worth checking out.
