Burritos are one of my favorite foods, mainly from restaurants and homemade. So I was a bit skeptical when I was trying these burritos from Evol Burritos since they were frozen and I’ve only had freshly made ones.
I was thrilled at the idea of a whole wheat wrap and all the different vegetables (red and green peppers, black beans, brown rice and tomato and corn salsa) included in it. It is 70% organic, vegan and with 10g of protein and 5g of fiber. There are even 10 more varieties of classic burritos including breakfast ones. Besides premium burritos and wraps, bowls, flatbreads and pizzas.
However once I tried these burritos I became disappointed when there was no taste to the veggies and the wrap was very dry and stiff. To me it was mainly like eating a burrito only filled with flavorless rice. I certainly did try to improve the taste and give it a chance by adding some sour cream to it. My second burrito I thought I could improve it by adding some hot sauce, but the taste didn’t improve with any add-ons.
Inside the burritos it felt like it needed some spice and flavor, not something that I thought I should be adding myself after cooking it. My pre-determined idea of what this burrito should taste like was completely opposite of what I was expecting.
Not sure if the way that it was cooked influenced the taste but cooking it in the microwave was one of the ways it was suggested to prepare it. So imagine it would be just as delicious as in a Panini press or pan fried. I don’t believe the cooking method was the issue, it could have been more the problem of the burritos I received being a month beyond the “best buy” date that was on the box.
I’m hoping all my criticisms are only because of a not so fresh box of burritos. Since I shared my burritos with 3 other friends, 2 out of 3 did actually enjoy them and didn’t find them as disappointing as I did. The voice and attitude of this company was something great I could certainly relate to and found their branding fun enough to not be so serious about food.
I’m willing to give them another chance and will be choosing a different variety of burrito at my local Whole Foods freezer section. With many more varieties of food choices from this brand I’m sure this is something I can grow to enjoy.
Hmmm…..good to know! At least, NOW, we actually have CHOICES in which vegan "fast foods" we can eat!! I SO remember when LomaLink hot dogs were one of the only "vegan" fast food products out there!!! When I was a little girl & even then they kind of freaked me out that they made a "fake" hotdog!! I had no idea then that our world would be full of them!!
Thank you for the review. But I think Burritos are one of those food that you want to eat fresh. But this might work for someone who needs a quick fix of a vegan food.
